CSCEC Middle East Awarded Abu Dhabi Midfield Terminal Structural Steel Subcontract

On 10th January 2013, CSCEC Middle East received Letter of Award to construct the steelworks of the Abu Dhabi Midfield Terminal Central Processor. Totally 45,000 tons of structural steel will be fabricated and erected within 28 months.

The award of this project is an outcome of the close cooperation between CSCEC Middle East and its sister company China Construction Steel Structure Corp. Ltd. in the past three years working through the three tendering phases, i.e. nominated subcontractor bidding, main contract tendering, and the final specialist sub-contractor tendering. It is an inspiring breakthrough of our business development in the UAE structural steel market, and obviously, will be very beneficial for our diversified operation in various specialized fields in the UAE and GCC as a whole.

With a total build-up area of 700,000sqm, the ‘X’-shaped Abu Dhabi Midfield Terminal is comprised of a 6-floor-central processor and 4 piers. Upon completion, the piers will accommodate up to 65 aircraft; check-in is capable of handling around 8,500 passengers per hour; baggage system can process over 19,000 bags per hour.

This project was designed by UK leading designer Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates (KPF), which is the most complex steel structure in the Middle East Region. The Central Processor Area Roof is composed of 18 curved steel arches, the biggest span of single arch up to 180 meter, with 50 meter in height and self-weight around 800 ton. It is a really critical challenge to CSCEC for both fabrication and installation. Moreover, the project is designed to achieve a minimum two Pearl rating of ESTIDAMA approach towards sustainable design and minimize its impact on the environment. The BIM (Building Information Modeling) is applied & utilized across all the design and construction process.

The mobilization of the project is organized and undertaking smoothly.
